There are several whitening products on the market and available over the counter, but not all of these options work. Whitening rinses and toothpastes do not sit on your teeth long enough to make much of a difference. Teeth whitening toothpastes often have very abrasive particles that act as a surface stain remover, but can’t actually penetrate the tooth to attain a whiter smile. In turn, these pastes can create or worsen tooth sensitivity.
Crest Whitestrips are an over the counter product that are actually proven to be successful. They are cost effective and have easy-to-follow instructions. Short term sensitivity can be a result, but with the use of sensitive toothpaste, can be minimized.
At Family Dentist Tree, we use Opalescence gel for teeth whitening. To get whitening through our office, you will first come in for an appointment to have impressions taken of your top and bottom teeth. Trays are made from your impressions, so the fit is perfect!
We record your current shade and give you gel that is placed in trays and worn overnight. It typically takes 2-4 weeks to achieve your desired shade. We like to see patients once a week while whitening so we can measure the shade and answer any questions you may have during the process.
It is important to know that existing fillings and crowns that are done before whitening will not change color. If they are visible in your smile, ask your dentist what steps you should take if you’d like a brighter smile!
